28th Chapter – Winter Cannes
Cannes, Sunday, March 29, 2026
Today, our friends from Nice, Bruce, Sheila, and Veronika came over for lunch. It is always great to see them. Rebecca’s quiche was a big hit and has become one of her signature dishes.

I discovered a new program that allows me to create posters from photos. So I had some fun with it.

Because Rebecca’s workout machine will be outdoors, I had to build an enclosure for it. I cut down a spare terrace shade to fit the machine. It was a bit of a challenge to make it fit properly. Next, I will cover it with plastic as a housing.

A few days ago, when she was getting her passport picture taken, Rebecca met some very nice students downtown, so we joined them and our two new Canadian friends for a bite at a downtown restaurant. Two of the students attend the University of Vermont, which is where my daughter Sarah, went to college. They are very nice people.

Today, Amazon delivered Rebecca’s workout machine, which will live on our terrace year-round.
I have to admit the directions were not very clear. One needs a PhD from Ikea to assemble it. It took me several hours to put it together correctly.

Today, we met up with our neighbors and friends, Nino and Sylvie. It was nice to see them again. I’m a big fan of Italian hot chocolate, which is like drinking a melted chocolate bar, nice and thick.

Cannes, Wednesday, December 31, 2025

We actually stayed up to midnight to see the Cannes fireworks. To our surprise, one of our neighbors had a rather significant fireworks show from his terrace.

Monaco, Tuesday, December 30, 2025
Rebecca and I took the train to Monte Carlo (1H/2M) to visit their Christmas market.

While there, we explored the town, which included a visit to the casino. Rebecca was almost run over by a Rolls-Royce as she crossed a street.

It was difficult to find a place to eat around 3:00 PM, but we managed to catch lunch at Maya Mia (1 Pl. de la Crémaillère) restaurant. They served amazing French fries.

The return home was a real adventure. In our attempt to take the train home to Cannes, we encountered a crush at the Monaco train station as there was a problem further down the track. Many people were arriving at rush hour to crowd into trains that were not moving. Rather than getting smushed, we left the station for nearby ice cream (a logical remedy). There, we unexpectedly found ourselves at the bus stop for Nice.
We pushed our way on a bus and exited at Nice Port Lympia. Walking to the train station took us past a retail store where Rebecca scored a new scarf. We then walked past a beautiful Nice Christmas display and continued walking to the train station to return home.

We took a walk around town after dinner and visited a local church.
